Managing a fundraising project often requires extra resource as charities understandably keep their teams lean. Delivering major fundraising challenges requires experience but it’s an effective route to raising your charities’ profile.

When I was asked to project manage a fundraising challenge to deliver the highest ever game of rugby on Mount Everest – The Everest Rugby Challenge - for the children’s charity of rugby, Wooden Spoon, I spent nine months working with the team to plan every detail. Together we recruited and supported the individuals taking part with their fundraising, travel details and altitude preparation. We organised several training and team building events. We managed suppliers, equipment and budget, overcoming the many logistical issues. We ensured that the event sponsors’ needs were met in terms of branded clothing and press coverage. And, ultimately, we successfully delivered the match at 6,300m and brought everyone home safely.

The Challenge raised over £200,000 in funds for a small charity, delivered millions of social interactions globally, numerous headlines in newspapers and on television news programmes, created a Guinness World record, generated a standalone documentary and engaged new volunteers, corporate sponsors and regular givers for Wooden Spoon.
